New Things

Laura is going back to work more full-time this spring- so we'll be looking for new options for Davis Monday through Wednesday. While I feel sad about it because I know he has loved playing with Laura, James and Scarlett, (he thinks he's the littlest brother) I also feel like the timing is good. It was hard (read: impossible) for me to think of taking Davis to daycare when he was tiny- but it's a lot easier now that he is 15 months old and loves to play! So I am SO thankful that Laura kept him for this last year and that Davis is ready for the next thing!

We went to look at a few schools today, and I actually felt really good about one of them. We were able to walk into the classroom and he got right up in the mix, playing with the little kids in the class, and then he just about died when he saw the indoor playground. We're also looking into nannies, so it's awesome to think that there is potentially more than one good option.

Anyway, he is just so fun these days. He has learned "no" and exercises that quite frequently. He is climbing on everything, he is silly, and loves to laugh, and oh my gosh, does he love the park. We walked over to the park in our neighborhood today and the second he saw the playground and all of the little kids, he just reached his arms out so far, while sitting in his stroller, like "Yes, come to me park, come to me!"

I'm realizing how big he is lately and how fast it's all going. It's so bittersweet. I love this age- and I don't want it to pass.

Tomorrow morning, Davis is doing the Tough Mudder. Crazy, I know. Toughest race on the planet they say. Zoinks. He'll do great though- he is just that guy! :)

Love my Davises-
Sam

Davis and his Kazoo

Bennett got a kazoo in his stocking for Christmas. Davis recently got his hands on it and has loved listening to the funny noises it makes. He would watch us do it, then try himself, but over and over he kept sucking in versus blowing out or talking through it. Then one day- this past weekend- he triumphed.

He was playing in his room while we were getting ready to go somewhere and all of the sudden Bennett goes "Sam- listen." And sure enough- the sweet sounds of the littlest kazooer resounded through the house. He's been playing with it ever since. Thank you Santa!

Third Time

is not the charm. Poor Davis has an ear infection. At least he is on medicine and hopefully back on the mend. His sweet daddy is staying home with him today.

Sharing our Story

We've been talking about joining our church for about 5 of the 7 years we've been going there. It's am amazing church- so welcoming, so laid back, so free of judgement, so honest. Its exactly what I needed after leaving Baylor, questioning my faith altogether, and I think Davis would say that it's very unlike what he expected church to be like. It's not about hellfire and brimstone. It's about hope and joy, and mainly love.

Anyway- last October we did the blitz membership class. We met for four hours, learned about the church, and were able to ask any questions. It was amazing- both because we learned a lot and because a woman in the class awkwardly claimed that many of her friends believe she is an angel of God. Anyway- that's neither here nor there. There are two parts in joining the church- the class- and then sharing your story with an elder. Today, we finally shared our story with a group at church. We both were pretty apprehensive- I mean while we're certainly believers- there are also so many things we struggle with and haven't figured out. So it was a little bit like "Umm, are we going to pass?" And "Geez, I hope this doesn't go poorly or we don't get a different view of the church that causes us to have to reconsider being there."

So we showed up at 9:15. We had little Davis in tow- which was awkward- but we didn't feel right taking him to sunday school since he has had a fever this weekend. We met with two really cool people that have spent half of their lives doing mission work in Costa Rica...and we shared where we were coming from.

And we put it all out there. Our questions, our hesitancies about certain things...and we were met with such great response. When he asked the question "Well, who do you have to help you with those questions..." I knew we were in the right place.

So I think we passed- ha! I mean I hope we did. I'm not really quite sure if we're done and that's just how it goes or what because we had to leave early due to little D. But regardless, it felt really good and I'm excited about what is to come- most specifically having Davis dedicated this spring.

Anyway. Amen. :)

Cozy Weekend

We had so much fun going to see Katie, Ray, Brayden and Callie- Davis was in heaven. He loved following Brayden around, shouting for him when he made a basket playing "shoot ball" and he seriously could not get enough of little Callie- who is the most adorable and sweet little girl. Davis kept walking up to her swing, and he would grin and say "Oooooh!" and try to touch her toes and hands. He will be a sweet big brother someday. Not soon- but someday. :)

Sunday, while Bennett was at his Whole Hog class (which he loved) Nikki came over to play. Davis was so excited to see her when he woke up- he couldn't stop grinning. He also grabbed her hand to walk down the hall- which he never does...so sweet.

Look at that bottom lip. Don't feel too bad for him- he sneaks over to our floor lamp and tries to shove it over, smiling deviously all the while.

Fitness Update

It's been a while since I've blogged about my fitness efforts- and mainly because there hasn't been much to say. We've still been working out steady and strong with Ahmad, though over the holiday period, didn't have much progress, which was frustrating. I'm happy to report though that today we had our monthly progress check-in and both Stacey and I's stats were great.

A few that I was proud of are: 2.5 pounds lost, 2% body fat lost, and 3 centimeters lost in the biceps. At this point I am one pound over what I was when I got pregnant. HOWEVER, when I got pregnant, I was about 12 pounds away from my normal weight. SO, as of today, I have 13 pounds to lose to hit my personal goal. Ahmad wants to go beyond that- but we'll see.

It's taken over a year to get here- and that bothers me...but there is really no point in dwelling on it more than figuring out why and how to avoid this happening again. I can't take a year to get back to myself each time I have a baby. But really- I've learned a lot and I think that is the best thing you can do- learn and change it next time.

We gave Ahmad a backpack for his birthday. We randomly found out we had missed his birthday and when we asked about it it was clear he hadn't really celebrated with anyone, so Stacey and I walked over to REI one day at work, picked out a cool North Face backpack and brought it to him last Thursday. He was so excited you would have thought we bought him a new car. It was really great. Maybe my favorite gift I gave this season just because it was clear that the fact that we thought about him meant even more than the gift itself.

The Weekend in Review

Thursday night I went to hang out with Kirsten and some girlfriends. We had pizza, wine, cookies...it was a fun evening for sure. My stomach felt a little funny when I left, but I figured it was not a big deal. Fast forward to 4:00 a.m. the next morning where I was sick as a dog for the next 8 hours. It was insane- hit me like a freight train. Luckily Honey was coming into town to watch Davis while we were in Arizona because I got to sleep all day...but I did have to miss my flight with Davis to Scottsdale. :(

Luckily we were able to move the flight so I still made part of the trip. I got in Saturday morning and spent the day relaxing. Scottsdale is like a shopping HAVEN so I had hoped to be out and about looking at fabulous things. I tried for about an hour but couldn't even think about walking anymore or trying anything on, so instead I went back and slept at the resort.

That night we had dinner with the Great Clips team. They were awesome and just how I pictured them. So midwestern, kind, funny, and just nice honest people. I am so thankful that Davis is part of a team he can admire and respect- and they certainly admire and respect Davis. He is the young, smart, fun guy on the team. I am not surprised about that.

I was so glad to get to spend a little time with Davis yesterday- I swear he grew so much over the weekend. He is really into saying "woah..." when something is interesting or new or something. It's hysterical- he sounds kind of like a teenage boy. I love love love him!

So that was the weekend.
This coming weekend we're going to go see Katie before they move to Ohio. Excited to see them, but sad to think of her moving.

Words

Davis is saying and doing a few more big boy things these days.

His recent favorite is "Uh oh". He gets what it means- so he says it when I drop something OR when he intentionally throws something he doesn't want to eat from his high chair. Ha.

He is also quite polite- he says "thank you" when you give him something. Such a sweetheart.

He is copying what people say a lot more, like my mom saying "Oh gosh..."
And he's started saying "PPPP" for Pico.

He is also really understanding when to cheer and clap for himself which is adorable. And he loves music. He's started to really jive with the beat, shake his head back and forth, and raise his hands up and down.

Still saying "Da!" occasionally and has said "mamamamamamama" a few times- but nothing consistent there. What gives?

Finally, some pics! Most of these took place at Zilker Park or Phil's. Yay Zilker Zephyr.

Trying to Keep Up

For Goodness Sakes! I know, I'm so behind and all my blogs have been so text-heavy which I fear no one enjoys other than me...but I have a million photos to look through, archive, and post to this blog. Starting back with Santa Baaaarbara. But now is not the time for dwelling on the past- this is 1-1-11. It's the first day of the year, God bless us all, so I'm just going to hit the high notes of the past few weeks and then I'll come back with more details (AND YES PHOTOS, MOM) soon.

Pre Christmas:
Took Davis to Zilker and met the Ryans for a picnic lunch!

Christmas Eve/Christmas:
Had the whole family to our house- went to the kid-friendly church service at Grace and had Davis wear an adorable plaid shirt with a little navy sweater vest. So dapper.

Christmas day- so many presents for goodness sakes- made me feel a little overwhelmed and I think next year I'll suggest we limit it or find a way to give to people that need things far more than we do. Though I loved everything Nikki, Mom, Davis, so thank you! A few of my favorite things were Old Gringo COWBOY BOOTS from Davis that i have lusted after for years...two amazing lights from red made of record albums, and from Nikki an amazing crimson cowl. Little Davis had a great christmas too- Honey gave him a vintage little stand up piano- just his size. He loved it. He also got some adorable little man clothes from Nikki and great books from Tony and my grandrents.

Some of my favorite gifts I gave people include: Davis: The Whole Hog class with Dai Due butchery and organic farm. He will be spending a whole day learning to butcher and prepare a whole hog. crazy, huh? My mom: new TV and great overnight bag from Stag. Nanny: a fab sweater from Nordstrom that she would never buy herself plus a cute little gray shirt with a built-in necklace to go underneath.

Tony wowed us all with his thoughtful gift giving and wrapping abilities...seriously, my mom oohed and aahed and I could tell he was winning her over present by present- mainly because they were so thoughtful for Nikki.

Post Christmas:
We have just lazed about and enjoyed ourselves to the max. We've napped whenever Davis napped. We've watched movies every night. We've gone to Phil's to play on the playground and have mini burgers 2-3 times, and we've tried to work out enough to cancel out all those mini burgers, for goodness sakes. Oh and we also fit karaoke in again- so fun I missed my 6 am workout the next morning. I told Ahmad that I made up for it in dancing like crazy at the karaoke bar. He was not impressed.

New Year's Eve:
Phils with the Ryans and the Hamblens. So fun to see the three boys at all different ages...and then a party at Tony's that he and Nikki threw. Some really fun characters there.

And now New Year's: yahoo!
I usually dread January and February- they're just so dreary and it's so long until the holidays come again so they feel a bit wanting. BUT- I'm excited for a fresh new year...and excited about the goals I have for myself, as well as the goals and plans we outlined during our Bennett family meeting last week.

Okay that's all for now- I'm exhausted just thinking about the opportunities within a whole new year.

Like I said, I promise more pics and more details this week.
