Partnership
It's so nice to have Bennett home for a whole week. Every little thing is so much easier, nicer, more fun when he is around. I'm really thankful he's mine...and our little family is ours.
Little Miss Thing Goes Mobile
Holden is crawling! It's still an army crawl, but she does the classic, and adorable thing where she gets up on all fours and rocks back and forth. On one hand, she is so happy that she can get around on the floor, but on the other, she gets very frustrated that she can't move as quickly or as easily as she would like...yet. Davis is starting to get a taste of her being up in his business...he's generally pretty good about it, but he has his moments.
Speaking of- he's been a real pill the past few days. It's like his only voice is a whiny, screaming, crying one. Also- he's been pushing our buttons with getting out of bed...but ooh, Bennett and I solved that problem the other night after about the 5th time of him getting up and walking down the hall with a sly look on his face. I looked at Bennett and I said "Next time he gets up...we go get his baby bed out of the garage and bring it in his room."
10 minutes later, he sneaks into the hall. And I just look at Bennett and say "Alright, lets go get Davis' baby bed. He isn't ready for a big boy bed..." And we just start marching down the hall. All business. I have never seen such panic or hysteria from him. It was like you could see his thoughts: "Oh crap. I've really done it this time. How do I undo this?"
He jumped in his bed, got under his covers, all the while screaming "I Need my Big Boy Bed. I Want my Big Boy Bed." We carried in the mattress, we brought in the rails, and his eyes were as big as saucers. Finally we said "Okay Davis. You can stay in your big boy bed but we're leaving this baby bed in here and if you get up again- we're putting it together and taking your big boy bed out."
Didn't see him again that night. Bennett and I giggled to ourselves in the other room. It's so funny being a parent.
Anyway, here are some phone pics of Miss Thing, Going Mobile!

September
September has always been one of my very favorite months of the year. In the midwest, it's the month when the leaves begin to change, the breeze begins to feel brisk and smell like outdoor activities, and you get to pull out your cozy blankets and sweatshirts. I realize that none of that happens in Texas in September, but I still love September.
In Texas, it's more about football season beginning, which has come to have a very special feeling for me. Our group of friends get together almost every Saturday to watch the game, smoke meat, and
(for us gals) talk through the game with a glass of wine and the newest gossip or fashion magazine. Of course I start thinking about sweaters and crock pot recipes, even though I know I have a while...but all in all, it's a great month.
So this Saturday, because I was feeling festive, because it was the first UT football game, and because my favorite person is born in September (Bennett), we went on an early and special outing to give said person, his birthday gift early. Drum roll, please:
The Big Green Egg. Apparently this thing is all the rage for meat lovers, grillers and cooks. It smokes, it grills, it makes pizzas. It's amazing, so they say. Davis is/was SO EXCITED...which made me SO HAPPY. He and Davis spent a lot of the weekend putting it together, setting up his grilling area, etc. Last night he grilled steaks and corn and they were so tasty, so really it's a gift that keeps on giving. I don't know why I gave it to him three weeks early, other than that I was excited about it.
Aside from grilling, we had a pretty busy weekend. We went to SA friday night to see Davis' family, Saturday we went and played with Carrie, Porter and my best blog friend, Meagan, who was in town with her little boy, Sawyer. Those three were crazy together. Sunday we went to church, went to Nikki's for a BBQ, and then yesterday we played, went to the mall, worked in the yard, and grilled. Not a bad weekend at all.
Unrelated, but recent, here are some pictures:

Sparkle & Shine
Doesn't she sparkle and shine? I just feel so joyful every time I look at this picture. I adore her. She is every bit as sweet and happy as she looks in this photo- all the time. I love her brown hair and her blue eyes and that smile kills me. What a little doll.
And how about this? Talk about sparkle. This is Nikki's engagement ring and this picture doesn't do it justice. It is, without a doubt, one of the top three most beautiful rings I've ever seen. She had to wait a long time for it because a designer hand-crafted it, but it's totally worth the wait.
This week has been okay. I'm so glad we have a long weekend and Bennett will be home. We'll just be relaxing, hanging with family and friends, maybe going to see Davis' family in San Antonio. Not sure. Here's to labor day!

Goofing Around
Davis wants to play with Holden all the time- I caught some pics of them "goofin around" (as Davis would say) in her bed on Saturday. They're going to be best buds. Enjoy.

Around The House
I've talked a lot about projects we've been doing around the house. Here are some pictures.
The yard BEFORE
This is serious. There is a lot of work to be done.
The yard mid-way.
3/4 of the way and working hard.
Should have finals in the next week or so. All the work was done by Bennett and Davis. In August.
Davis' Big Boy Room. (I'm hesitant to even post these because the lighting/color is so off). I wish Carrie was my full-time photographer but I had to snap these while his room was semi-clean...which is incredibly rare. It usually looks like this:
But que sera, here they are.
But que sera, here they are.
Forgot to take a before- but if you really want to see one- you can dig back into my posts in about September of 2009 and see his baby room.
Also, I mentioned his new track loader...but did I tell you about his weight lifter? Pretty cute.
Day 2
Davis did great...but I sort of felt weird at drop off this morning. Let me first just say that I realize that my normal is probably other people's weird...so I think in acknowledging that, I'm free to also note what I consider weird. Equal opportunity judgement, if you will.
So I walk in to his classroom...and I'm greeted by his lead teacher, Hillary, who is great. And then I chat up the 3rd teacher, Mr. Johnnie, because I was a few minutes late to orientation and didn't hear what his back story was.
First things first, he seems incredibly kind and cool, and like he really enjoys his job. But he's a little awkward. Like, he uses buzz words all the time in conversation, and he kind of looks at you for approval non-stop, so it doesn't feel natural. I'll ask how he is and how the first day was and he'll say something like "You know, I love early childhood development. They're just learning so much...(pause)...you know, active play? Social learning...and I'm their guide." It's a canned response. Nothing conversational or natural about it. So that made me feel a little weird. Not bad, just weird. I mean some people have weird social skills, but are awesome people, right?
Then this little boy walks in, and he is squawking/roaring like a dinosaur. And I know that seems typical for a 3 year old...but it felt a little odd...especially paired with his mom. She was SO LOUD. And gosh, I wish you could have been there to know what I mean, but let me try to describe.
A few kids and a couple parents are sitting on the floor, talking and playing with various toys when this curvy woman in a very loud print dress and very high heels, busts through opens the door, and with this resounding giant bird-like voice shouts "ADAM! TELL MISS HILLARY WHAT DAY IT IS!!!" And the squawking dinosaur kid (who also looks about two years older than Davis) just keeps making animal noises and she continues to shout "ADAM. I DON'T LIKE THOSE NOISES. ADAM! TELL MISS HILLARY WHAT DAY IT IS!!!" And he is so clearly wanting to just go play, but she won't let up.
This goes on for about five minutes and then the lady declares that it is his 3rd birthday. So the few of us that are there say "happy birthday" and try to sort of get back to what we were doing. But the sound of her ongoing monologue pretty much blocks everything else out.
And for a moment, I sort of zone out, and I hear this bird-like (maybe a cockatoo?) lady, and one crying little boy (this is his first time away from mom) and Johnnie talking about developmental steps and I'm like "where am I?" And then it's time for the lady to leave, and she says "ADAM! I NEED A KISS AND A HUG..." and he is not paying attention, which bothers her as though she was blown off by an adult, so she says "ADAM. I NEED SOME KISSIES AND SOME HUGGIES PLEASE..." And I have to focus on not barfing.
Luckily, Davis was so happy and busy playing with Hudson and some other friends. And luckily I know a few of the parents and kids in the class and I know they're legit...but man, there are some weird people in this world. I hope I end up loving his teachers and his little friends. I think maybe I was spoiled in the Koalas class. Zoinks.
